Commitment to application

8 May 2012

Hexagon Metrology's presentation at the CONTROL 2012 trade exhibition focuses on applications for three core industries.

With a stand of over 500 square metres, Hexagon Metrology's presence at the CONTROL trade exhibition in Stuttgart is one of the most important for the company. This year's stand focuses primarily on applications for the automotive, aerospace and energy industries.

Metrology for the road
Developing countries are experiencing a strong trend towards mobility and are thereby creating stronger demand in the automotive market. Equally, there is an increasing demand for more efficient internal combustion engines while the demand for electro-mobility is also gaining ground. Hexagon Metrology provides solutions in these fields and supports each aspect of the automotive manufacturing process from the design and development phase, the construction of prototypes and pre-production through to tool and mould-making, as well as assembly and final inspection.

Just to give one example, Optiv multi-sensor measuring machines are used for measuring electronics units, electric motor components, sensors, LED lighting, circuit boards, displays, injection pumps and so on. Powertrain components on the other hand, such as engine blocks, cylinder heads, drive shafts and cam shafts, gears and gearbox housings can all be tested with the high-precision stationary coordinate measuring machines of the Leitz and DEA brands. Cognitens white light scanning systems measure complex forms and body shell components, either manually or automatically.

Metrology for aerospace
Technical progress is essential in aerospace too. More efficient power systems and lighter materials, for example composites, are used to reduce fuel consumption and save resources. Engines with longer service life and easier maintenance schedules are in demand: they help to reduce costs and maintain profit margin.

Hexagon Metrology offers systems to the industry which point the way to these objectives. So-called ‘blisks’ – bladed disk assemblies – are checked in test rigs by the industry, for example, using a combination of the high-precision Leitz coordinate measuring machines and QUINDOS, Hexagon Metrology’s dedicated software for special geometries. Manually operated or automatic Leica Geosystems laser trackers test and position large structural components of civil and military aeroplanes, and helicopters, ready for final assembly. ROMER portable measuring arms are suitable for the tactile or non-contact measurement of sheet metal, plastic and carbon fibre components. Inductive TESA probes are also used for checking aviation turbine blades.

Metrology for wind, water, sun & Co.
The world's growing hunger for energy has to be satisfied. It is a fact that power stations only really perform well when their key components are manufactured to top quality criteria, irrespective of the type of fuel they are used with. This is where metrology by Hexagon Metrology comes into play.

Mobile Leica Geosystems laser trackers measure tower segments, motor bearings and turbine or rotor blades. They support the alignment of solar panel installations and are used for the precise setting up and adjustment of generators and turbines. Leitz and DEA coordinate measuring machines check the rotor hubs, gears, gearboxes and generators of wind power stations.  Meanwhile ROMER portable measurement arms are particularly suited to the measurement of smaller components in situ, such as solar modules or gears.
