Prototype Part Development & Quality Assurance

Cognitens products support initial activity of producing small batch of prototype parts at either a supplier’s facility or the OEM’s new model centre. The objects to be measured are the surface of soft strike dies or part panels for surface and feature deviation before and after laser trimming.

User benefits: There is no more need for costly checking of fixtures. Cognitens WLS400M reduces the measurement time to a minimum. Users conduct the measurement directly on the production floor and reduce the amount of scrap and required rework on parts.

Prototype Body Assembly Development

Measurements here refer to partial or complete prototype car bodies to evaluate the expected assembly process and results and car body assemblies on their fixtures. In the focus of interest are areas on the body which affect subsequent assembly operations. Measurements also include the analysis of mating / matching interfaces.

User benefits: Results are real-time and support iterative quality improvements. Cognitens systems guide the manual assembly tools and the adjustment of fixtures. They help solve engineering problems faster than with conventional methods by quickly adjusting datums for improving assembly.

Die Casting Measurement & Cutter Path Optimization

White light systems perform complete surface measurements of a die casting to compare results to design for initial dimensional evaluation. The CoreView software generates an STL output of the casting to update the CAM (Computer Aided Machining) process.

User benefits: Machining time can be reduced by optimizing cutter paths based on actual die casting dimensions. Users are able to identify shallow / raised areas compared to CAD to avoid missing the material and machining air as well as reducing the chances of crashing the tool due to an unexpected bump. Also, machining “air time” is reduced to minimum, and operation is allowed without constant supervision.

Die Machining Validation

Cognitens systems measure the complete surface and all features of a machined die. The CoreView Pro software module enables result comparison to the die’s CAD data and identifies deviations.

User benefits: Verification that the produced die sets meet engineering specifications becomes a quick job. If rework or fine machining is necessary, the required areas are exactly defined.

Virtual Die Matching & Clearance Analysis

To create a virtual 3D model, white light users perform a complete dimensional measurement of the lower and upper machined dies. Embedded software or offline measurement capabilities enable the virtual assembly of the die set and the check for potential collisions or gaps between the dies.  Cross section and measurement features are used to resolve die matching issues

User benefits: Crashing the dies during initial tryout of die sets is practically impossible. Identifying the source of die matching problems is easy. The system offers guidance for rework operations if necessary.

Operational Panel Measurement

Operational panels need to be measured throughout the press line tryout process in order to make sure that there are no deviations from the original panel designs. CoreView helps analyzing the dimensional quality.

User benefits: Dimensional part forming problems are tracked down to the origin die. Cognitens systems allow the translation of measured operational panel deviations and spring back to required die changes.
